Urine and blood pregnancy tests are sensitive for detecting low levels of HCG in early in pregnancy. Accurate timing and following manufacturer's instructions will reduce the chance of getting a false negative result. Be mindful of any illnesses or medicines that could also give you a false negative or false positive result. Consult your doctor if you think your pregnancy test is wrong.
The screen is essentially the same as the screening tests that look for only three substances, except the likelihood of identifying pregnancies at risk for Down Syndrome is higher through the evaluation of Inhibin-A levels. The false positive rate of the test is also lower.
Urine contains all of the above plus beta core fragment. Abnormal pregancies (Down syndrome, pre-eclampsia, etc) produce much greater and more variable proportions of nicked hCG, free beta subunit, and beta core fragment.
When a normal pregnancy is not apparent, the situation might lead to extensive evaluation to find the source of the HCG and cause unnecessary treatment, according to the Handbook of Clinical Laboratory Testing During Pregnancy (page 86 to 87).
You can carry out most pregnancy tests from the first day of a missed period. If you don't know when your next period is due, do the test at least 76 days after you last had unprotected sex.
It is important to keep in mind that the timing of the test is not based on when you had sex, but when you think you ovulated. If you don't have 78-day cycles, or if they are irregular, use an ovulation calculator to help you figure out when you likely ovulated.
You hold out, one more day, one more day…and then you take it. And if it goes your way (please, God!), the blue cross means life will never be the same again. Though at that point - standing in the bathroom on your own, staring repeatedly at the tiny cross in case you’ve somehow seen it wrong or misinterpreted it - you can’t possibly know quite to what extent.
If you're pregnant and want to continue with the pregnancy, contact your GP or a midwife to start your antenatal care. You can use the pregnancy due date calculator to work out when your baby is due.
Predictor Early pregnancy test &ndash 9 days before your period is due (again the packaging says 5 days before the day of your missed period &ndash the day after your due date)
For more than 85 years, DIY pregnancy tests have been the first hint for women about whether or not they are expecting. And now they may also have the power to reveal how far along the pregnancy is.
